Facts about Unique Features of the Tarsier
- 05
Unlike most primates, tarsiers communicate using ultrasonic vocalizations that are inaudible to the human ear.
- 04
A tarsier's elongated tarsus bones in its feet, which give the animal its name, allow it to leap distances many times its own body length between trees.
- 03
Each of a tarsier's eyes is roughly the same size as its entire brain, making them the largest eyes relative to body size of any mammal.
- 02
Tarsiers are the only fully carnivorous primates, feeding exclusively on insects, lizards, and small vertebrates with no plant matter in their diet.
- 01
The tarsier has eyes that are fixed in its skull and cannot move, so it must rotate its head up to 180 degrees to look around.
